Hampshire's Michael Bates was one of four boys who spent a week at the ECB National Cricket Academy in Loughborough as part of The Daily Telegraph Scholarship scheme.
The 16-year-old Lord Wandsworth College pupil was selected after winning a DT Scholarship accolade at last year's annual ESCA Bunbury Festival.
There he was also selected to play for England in his age category.
The Bunbury Festival is known throughout English cricket as the "feeder" for the national side.
Eight of the 11 players in England's victorious 2005 Ashes team played in the festival.
Bates was coached by ex-Zimbabwean Test star Andy Flowers and England ace Simon Jones.
Bates said: "The week has taught me never to be satisfied and to work harder to achieve new standards.
"I have also been amazed that the gap between my-self and the pros is not as big as I thought.
"That is a real driving force to improve."
