Homegrown pair Jimmy Adams (86) and Chris Benham (76) starred as Hampshire closed the first day of their championship season on 352-6 against Surrey.
Opener Adams laid the foundations after Shane Warne had won the toss, and then Benham blasted 76 from just 82 balls at the Oval.
Michael Brown (42), championship debutant Michael Lumb (49) and Nic Pothas (40*) also contributed, while Warne's unbeaten 6 from 11 balls needed only one scoring stroke.
Dimitri Mascarenhas is making his first appearance of the season after missing the Friends Provident Trophy win agaist Middlesex on Sunday with an ankle/heel injury.
