RESULT: Hampshire lost by 135 runs after being bowled out for 75 in reply to Essex's 210-7.
Essex won toss.
The Hampshire Hawks were dismissed for their lowest score in the 44-year history of the Friends Provident Trophy.
Jimmy Adams (23) and Michael Lumb (11) were the only players to reach double figures as the Hawks were all out for 75 in 24.5 overs.
The county's previous lowest score in the competition was the 95 made in a quarter-final tie against Lancashire at Old Trafford in 1975, when it was still sponsored by Gillette.
This was also the Hawks' lowest one-day score since being rolled out for 69 in the National League by Glamorgan two years ago.
Graham Napier (3-16) took three of the first four wickets, which fell for 18 runs in 34 balls.
And then England's Ravi Bopara (3-13) took three wickets in his first five overs.
A disastrous reply began when Nic Pothas trapped lbw by a Napier yorker in the first over.
Napier fell to his knees in celebration after claiming the prize wicket of last week's centurion with the fifth ball of the innings (0-1).
A bad start got worse for the Hawks when Napier uprooted Chris Benham's off stump with the second ball of his next over, which left the Hampshire right hander and beat his defensive prod(7-2).
Then former England bowler Alex Tudor dismissed Mitchell Stokes (4), finding the rookie's outside edge to leave the Hawks reeling (9-3).
In the seventh over, the Hawks slumped to 18-4 when Napier bowled John Crawley (4) via an inside edge.
And then Bopara dismissed Lumb (11) and Lamb (1) in his first two overs.
Lumb whipped the England man to long leg, where Jamie Middlebrook held on (40-5).
And then Lamb was caught behind off an inside edge (48-6).
Shane Warne was put down at short mid-wicket when on one and then had his off stump knocked out by Bopara (54-7).
Warne (4) was bowled via an inside edge and did well not to react after being goaded by Bopara during the lively Essex celebrations.
Jimmy Adams (23) was caught at the wicket after edging off-spinner James Middlebrook in the 20th over (55-8).
Pakistan leg spinner Danish Kaneria completed the rout. He had Chris Tremlett (3) caught by Alastair Cook at first slip before bowling Billy Taylor as Hampshire's last man attempted to sweep.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris Tremlett had marked his first appearance of the season with two wickets in three overs and the run out of Bopara this morning.
Tremlett had Essex captain Ronnie Irani (4), who was fresh from a career-best 218 in the championship, caught by John Crawley at short mid-wicket in the ninth over(23-1).
Then Hampshire dismissed Mark Pettini and Alex Tudor in successive overs.
James Bruce had Pettini (2) well caught by Jimmy Adams at deep mid-wicket in the 12th (36-2).
Tremlett yorked Tudor (42-3) before Hampshire took the wickets of Essex's two England batsmen in the 20th and 21st overs.
Alastair Cook (37) was caught by Crawley at short extra cover off the last ball of Bruce's allocation (58-4).
And after an encouraging first spell (7-1-12-2) Tremlett continued his fine morning by running out Bopara (10)from mid off, uprooting middle stump with a direct hit after the England number seven tried to scamper a quick single (58-5).
Jimmy Adams' first one-day wicket accounted for Ryan Ten Doeschate (24), who put on 57 for the sixth wicket with James Foster.
Ten Doeschate skied a third catch of the morning to Crawley at fly slip in the 33rd over (125-6).
Warne was not at his best after bowling 44 overs yesterday, but had left hander Tim Phillips (18) caught on the square-leg boundary in his seventh over, the 42nd (149-7).
Then James Foster (69* from 81 balls) and James Middlebrook (37* from 31 balls) put on an unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 61 in the last eight overs to give the Essex attack a respectable total to bowl at.
It was an impressive fightback, with Tremlett conceding 32 runs from his last three overs when he returned at the end of the Essex innings.
The Hawks had made two changes from the side that beat the Middlesex Crusaders last week.
Tremlett replaced James Tomlinson and Mitchell Stokes was in for Shaun Udal (ankle), but Dimitri Mascarenhas was unavailable after twisting a knee against Surrey yesterday.
Hampshire bowling: Tremlett 10-1-44-2, Bruce 10-1-39-2, Taylor 10-1-25-0, Lamb 4-0-18-0, Adams 7-0-34-1, Warne 9-0-48-1.
