Michael Carberry will make his first championship appearance of the season against his former Kent teammates at Canterbury tomorrow - in place of Chris Benham.

Hampshire Academy product Benham has been left out of the squad for the first time this season following Carberry's recovery from a knee injury.

Michael Brown would usually be expected to make way for the left-handed Carberry, but his centuries against Surrey and Yorkshire have ensured he keeps his place.

Benham, 24, has had a satisfactory start to the season but is unfortunate to be dropped ahead of new signing Michael Lumb, after scoring more championship runs than the left-hander this season (129 at 32 to Lumb's 114 at 28).

Manager Paul Terry said: "Chris has been going okay without nailing down a big score and now Carbs is fit again after a good winter with England A, we felt he should play.

"Chris will be very disappointed not to be playing, but there's a long way to go this season.

"When he gets back in the side he needs to convert a few of the scores he's been getting and make it difficult to leave him out.

"The same goes for other quality players who have been left out, like Sean Ervine".

"Lumby was a big signing for us and is a proven player over a number of years.

"But as a top-order batter, and with six or seven very good batsmen after five places, he is also aware that he is expected to get big scores.

Shaun Udal is also added to the side that drew the rain-affected match against Lancashire at the Rose Bowl a fortnight ago.
