Nic Pothas has revealed his "surprise" at the publicity generated by his comments following Hampshire's Twenty20 game at Southgate on Monday.

Pothas gave an interview which was played on national radio yesterday in which he condemned the louts who stoned Hampshire's team bus and also stole valuables from the Middlesex dressing room.

Speaking to the Daily Echo last night, Pothas said: "It came as a surprise that my comments generated so much publicity.

"The Kent batsman Martin Van Jaarsveld, a friend from our days together in South Africa, sent me a text yesterday to say I was getting a lot of abuse from the DJs at Radio One.

"That followed my complaints at the lack of security at Southgate.

There was not actually a lot of abuse directed at us during Monday night's game.

"I was also referring to the situation at county grounds generally, as I have done previously in my Daily Echo column this year.

We have to put up with a lot of abuse at away grounds, especially in one-day and Twenty20 matches, and we've had enough of it.

"I can handle spectators referring to my big nose - that's the sort of banter that goes on in the dressing room all the time.

"But when they insult my mother and start vandalising our team bus it is time for something to be said.

"If Monday's game had been a Pro40 or a Friends Provident Trophy match there would have been no play.

"But we wanted to provide a spectacle for the fans as we're in the entertainment industry. "So to find that our return home from London was being delayed because yobs had smashed our coach was the last straw.

"I have nothing against Twenty20 games being played at outgrounds but there has to be a review of security at all games".
