Dimitri Mascarenhas helped England level the two-match Twenty20 series against the West Indies in another thriller at The Brit Oval.

The Hampshire all rounder hit an unbeaten 18 from 16 balls as he and Owais Shah put on 69 in just six overs to secure a five-wicket win.

Mascarenhas arrived at the crease with England 104-5 midway through the 14th over, needing a further 66 to win.

After carving Powell for his only four through backward point in the 15th over, he kept his head and ran relentlessly between the wickets to help Shah win England the match with a blistering 55 not out from just 35 balls.

Mascarenhas had taken 2-39 in the first match on Thursday but was not as successful with the ball tonight, going for 32 runs off his three overs.

However, he added another catch - a high take at long on - to add to his two yesterday, before starring with the bat.

With six runs needed at the beginning of the final over, five wides from West Indies skipper Chris Gayle, who had reached his half century with a six against Mascarenhas, ensured an England win with three balls remaining.

Mascarenh's encouraging start to his international career has boosted his chances of playing in the one-day international series against the West Indies, which starts at Lord's on Sunday.

He said: ''I'm loving it. I'm having a great time. I was given some advice to enjoy it and I'm certainly doing that.

"Many times for Hampshire I've not been able to see it through so I was really happy to be there at the end.

"We've really learned from yesterday and it is a big positive going into the one-dayers.''

Man-of-the-match Shah paid tribute to Mascarenhas's effort.

He said: ''I played myself in and he kept his cool and kept me going. We kept talking and made sure we saw each other through to the win.''

Paul Collingwood was delighted to level his first series as England captain.

He said: "To knock off a total like that shows how we bat in depth. Credit to Owais and Dimi because the light wasn't good, it was a great effort.''
