England will be hoping their gamble on the fitness of Steve Harmison has not backfired as they await news of the hernia injury which has sidelined their pace spearhead.
Harmison lost his battle to be fit for Thursday's opening npower Test against India at Lord's yesterday and was replaced in the 13-man squad by Hampshire seamer Chris Tremlett.
The Durham fast bowler first sustained the problem during the final Test victory over West Indies at Chester-le-Street but surgery was delayed in the hope he could recover and play a full part against India.
But further problems ruled him out for Lord's and he will visit a specialist today to determine whether surgery is now required, something which would effectively rule him out for the rest of England's summer - and also the Friends Provident Trophy final against Hampshire at Lord's on August 18.
Chairman of selectors David Graveney confirmed: "We've taken the precaution of adding Chris Tremlett to the squad following confirmation that Stephen Harmison will not be available.
"Chris performed well in the recent England Lions tour match against India and his inclusion will give us additional options when we come to decide on our starting 11 for Thursday."
