GREG LAMB has been ruled out of Friends Provident Trophy final contention after suffering a broken thumb while playing for Hampshire's second XI at Somerset yesterday.

The off-spinning all rounder is likely to be out for up to three weeks and his injury marred an otherwise good day for Giles White's side at Taunton Vale Shaun Udal took 5-48 as Somerset were bowled out for 246 on the first day of the three-day Championship match.

Hampshire reached 80-3 at the close, but Lamb will play no further part and is out of the squad for the Lord's final against Durham on August 18.

Udal said: "Greg's broken the second joint in his right thumb and that's put a massive cloud on the day for us.

"Fortunately it's not displaced but it's still terrible bad luck for him, it's horrible. He was bowling really well for the second team and was pushing for a first-team place."
