Sussex pair Andy Hodd and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan saw the Sharks home by two wickets with seven balls to spare in their Pro40 Division One match against neighbours Hampshire at Hove today.

In an entertaining encounter, Michael Lumb's fine century - his first for Hampshire in any competition - laid the foundations for an away win before a wonderful spell of bowling from James Kirtley and a timely knock from Sussex skipper Chris Adams turned the tables on the visitors.

Lumb, opening the innings after Shane Warne had won the toss and opted to bat, struck 108 at a run-a-ball rate, claiming 13 fours and sharing an opening stand of 147 with John Crawley (61).

Spinner Mushtaq Ahmed made the breakthrough but it was James Kirtley - a surprise call-up to England's World Twenty20 party - who did most damage.

He claimed five wickets for 36 runs to ensure the rest of the Hawks innings did not run to plan, with only Sean Ervine (56) making a serious contribution after the removal of the openers.

Sussex then made a 67-run opening partnership of their own before Luke Wright - like Kirtley a leftfield selection for Peter Moores' limited-overs plans - fell for 25.

Dashing knocks from Chris Nash (59 from 56 balls) and Adams, with a forceful 70 from 49 deliveries, kept the hosts on course.

Wickets continued to fall though and it was left to wicketkeeper Hodd (31 not out) to steer the side home, while Pakistan seamer Naved-ul-Hasan held up his end, allowing number XI Kirtley to remain in the pavilion.

New Zealand Test star Stephen Fleming produced a fiery innings of 90 in 60 balls to ensure his Nottinghamshire side had little trouble beating Northamptonshire at Trent Bridge.

Career-best bowling from David Hussey (three for 26) restricted Northamptonshire to 211 for six, with half-centuries from Chris Rogers (58) and captain David Sales (52).

Fleming made light work of that after Will Jefferson and Graeme Swann had made 23 apiece, carving 12 fours and three sixes before succumbing 10 short of his ton.

Hussey and Samit Patel carried on where their skipper left off, though, and sealed the win with 10.2 overs remaining.

Reigning champions Essex were dumped to the bottom of the Division One table after going down to Warwickshire at Southend.

The hosts - still without a win in the competition - went down by six runs under the Duckworth-Lewis system after rain had reduced the contest to a contest of 34 overs a side.

Warwickshire totalled 188 for six while Essex were bowled out for 184 in the final over after being left a revised target of 191.

Fast bowler Heath Streak - with four wickets for 39 runs from his six overs, including top scorer Grant Flower (53) - was instrumental in carrying the Bears to their first success of the campaign, which enables them to swap places with Essex at the foot of the table.
