CLOSE - SURREY 283-2 (RAMPRAKASH 124*, BUTCHER 51*) AFTER 84 OVERS
Hampshire bowling - Powell 16-5-57-1, Bruce 17-5-34-0, Griffiths 13-1-69-0, Ervine 14-1-44-0, Udal 21-5-55-1, Adams 3-0-10-0
273-2 Mark Butcher crunched a square cut against Griffiths for his eighth four to reach fifty from 99 balls. Hampshire look rudderless without Shane Warne and not like potential Championship winners on this evidence. Hampshire conceded 500-7 against Sussex in the first season at the Rose Bowl but that six-year-old record is already looking under threat
220-2 Ramprakash reached his 94th first-class hundred (169 balls)at the end of the third over after tea when he cut Sean Ervine for his 14th four. Chris Tremlett and Dimitri Mascarenhas were deemed surplus to requirements by England at Old Trafford today but are badly missed by Hampshire this afternoon. Powell is all over the place
TEA - SURREY 203-2 (RAMPRAKASH 98*, BUTCHER 9*) AFTER 64 OVERS
181-1 WICKET (JON BATTY) The first ball of the 58th over was skied to mid-off, where James Bruce took the catch to see off Batty for 55. It was a timely wicket but Ramprakash is the dangerman. He hit Griffiths for four fours in the previous over, with the third nutmegging Bruce at fine leg. Batty and Ramprakash put on 145 but the biggest second-wicket partnership against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl was by another Surrey pair - Ian Ward and Nadeem Shahid put on 197 here in 2002
142-1 Batty has now reached his fifty (136 balls). The batsman-wicketkeeper has done well against Hampshire this season. He also hit 121 as Surrey made a brave 467, chasing 496 to win, at the Brit Oval in the first game of the season. Ramprakash made an unbeaten 107 in that game. Hampshire could do without repeats for the pair today
133-1 The talented Mr Ramprakash reached his fifty from 111 balls. The Championship's leading run scorer hit a straight six against Sean Ervine before lunch and also has six fours to his name.
125-1 Ramprakash reached his 30,000th first-class run in the ninth over after lunch and now has 47 to his name after cutting Shaun Udal for his sixth four. Ramprakash is looking in fine touch but Powell is not. His radar went awry in the previous over but he followed up with a bouncer that nearly floored Jon Batty.
LUNCH - SURREY 96-1 (BATTY 32* RAMPRAKASH 31*)AFTER 32 OVERS
36-1 WICKET (SCOTT NEWMAN)The left-handed opener cut and drove Daren Powell for two fours in the 13th over before he was caught by Michael Brown at short leg for 24. Powell is playing his last game for Hampshire before joining the West Indies squad for the Twenty20 World Cup
TOSS: Surrey have elected to bat
TEAM NEWS: Hampshire have made one change to the side that drew with Lancashire at Old Trafford last week. Shaun Udal replaces the injured Shane Warne so Liam Dawson will have to wait for his first-class debut. If Dawson plays against Worcestershire at Kidderminster next week or against Kent on September 11, he will become Hampshire's youngest post-war County Championship debutant. Play is due to start at 11.30am following the Hawks' floodlit Pro40 win against the Warwickshire Bears last night.
