Dimitri Mascarenhas has missed out on a place in the Twenty20 World Cup squad - after James Anderson was called up to replace the injured Ravi Bopara.

Mascarenhas was in contention to replace Bopara for the tournament in South Africa after belting five successive sixes in the recent two-wicket one-day defeat against India at the Brit Oval.

England head coach Peter Moores explained: "Jimmy comes in because we've got a few niggles among our seamers. Ryan Sidebottom has been out for a while with side strain, and Chris Tremlett and Fred Flintoff have experienced some pain too.

"It might seem strange replacing a batter with a bowler, but we've already got one spare batter.

"Since we picked that side Luke Wright has come on - we've all seen how much he has developed as a cricketer - and he's holding that place now."

Mascarenhas is in contention to play for Hampshire against Gloucestershire inthe Pro40 first division on Sunday - 24 hours after tomorrow's Natwest Series decider against India at Lord's.

But if Andrew Flintoff fails to prove his fitness tomorrow, Mascarenhas is likely to stay with the England party - and travel to South Africa for the Twenty20 opener against Zimbabwe in Cape Town on Thursday after all.
