Hampshire closed on 115-5 (Pothas 35*, Mascarenhas 13*) in reply to Yorkshire's 398
Losing Shane Warne, Shaun Udal and James Bruce before the season began was bad enough.
But Hampshire's bowling resources were stretched even further at Headingley yesterday, when they had to do without Shane Bond and Dimitri Mascarenhas because of injury.
Bond twisted his right ankle on Wednesday and was prevented from bowling at all after Yorkshire resumed on 270-6 at 12pm.
The 32-year-old has had an injury-prone past but the good news is that he is expected to bowl in Yorkshire's second innings.
Hampshire physio Andrew Nealon said: "It's not a serious injury and Shane's never had any trouble with the ankle before so should be able to bowl again in this match."
That may be too late to save Hampshire from a first Championship defeat of the season as their captain was also unable to bowl yesterday.
A stiff neck prevented Mascarenhas, in his last match before his Indian Premier League fortnight with the Rajasthan Royals, from bringing himself on and Yorkshire's tail capitalised by adding 128 in 42 overs before being dismissed for 398.
Against Sussex last week, Bond came into his own against the tail, which he blew away with the second new ball.
So he and the experienced Mascarenhas were conspicuous by their absence from Hampshire's attack as Andrew Gale received useful support from Tim Bresnan, Ajmal Shahzad and Matthew Hoggard on his way to 138, his second first-class century, having been unbeaten on 99 overnight.
Gale eventually played on to the persevering James Tomlinson, who claimed the left-hander as his 50th first-class victim.
While Hampshire were without their two most experienced bowlers, Matthew Hoggard had a point to prove to England captain Michael Vaughan and National Selector Geoff Miller.
Hoggard made full use of the seam-friendly conditions by bowling beautifully.
Hampshire's top order had no answer to the man who was made a scapegoat for England's heavy defeat to New Zealand in the first Test in Hamilton last month.
Hoggard finished with 5-51 with two devastating spells from the Kirkstall Lane End either side of tea as Hampshire were reduced to 82-5.
Michael Brown was caught at short leg, Jimmy Adams chopped an attempted drive on to his own stumps and soon after being felled by a Hoggard delivery that struck him in the groin and split his box, Michael Carberry was brilliantly caught by a diving Bresnan at fourth slip.
Miller left at tea but with England captain Michael Vaughan fielding at mid-off, Hoggard did not let up.
After making a fluent 25, John Crawley lost his off stump to a ball that nipped back and Michael Lumb, having dropped a simple chance at first slip that would have given Chris Tremlett the wicket of Ajmal Shahzad for 26, was trapped lbw for the tenth time in 14 Championship innings.
Needing 249 to avoid the follow on when they began their reply, Hampshire were staring down the barrel but Nic Pothas and Mascarenhas added 33 to lead the visitors to 115-5 by the close, still needing 134 to avoid being asked to bat again.
