CLOSE: Hampshire are 136-4, still 103 runs behind Yorkshire's 398
Hampshire will have to follow the resilient lead of Michael Brown and Nic Pothas if they are to avoid a first Championship defeat of the season at Headingley tomorrow.
England discard Matthew Hoggard finished with 6-57 as Hampshire were made to follow on after being dismissed for a first-innings 159.
After beginning their second innings 239 behind the home side's 398, Hampshire slumped to 84-4 when former Yorkshire batsman Michael Lumb was caught by Adil Rashid at backward point.
But Brown (58*) and Pothas (28*) put on 52 unbeaten runs for the fifth wicket to at least ensure Hampshire avoided the ignominy of a three-day defeat.
Another 109 runs are needed to make Yorkshire bat again but when Lumb (7) and John Crawley (15), who was dropped on seven, succumbed to Anthony McGrath's gentle seamers the home side looked as though they would finish the job tonight.
Left-hander Lumb's loose shot to the fourth ball after tea gave McGrath his second wicket in seven deliveries after Crawley had edged a full-length delivery to second slip in the penultimate over of the afternoon session.
Introducing himself to the attack was not McGrath's only inspired bowling change.
Fast-medium bowler Tim Bresnan took two wickets in his first two overs after Michael Carberry and Brown had made a solid start to Hampshire's second innings.
Carberry edged Bresnan's first delivery, which was angled across his bows, to second slip before Jimmy Adams was trapped lbw.
Pothas nicked the first ball of the day, a Matthew Hoggard outswinger, to first slip but he and Brown at least ended it with a battling second-innings stand, more of which will be required today.
Rain and bad light meant 24.3 overs were lost today but someone will be needed to score Hampshire's first hundred of the season if Dimitri Mascarenhas is not to leave for the Indian Premier League on the back of a first Championship defeat as the county's captain.
Yorkshire bowling (first innings): Hoggard 19-3-57-6, Kruis 18-7-36-1, Shahzad 13-6-21-1, Bresnan 14-5-29-1, Rashid 6.3-3-10-1
Yorkshire bowling (second innings): Hoggard 10-2-25-0, Kruis 10-1-23-0, Bresnan 7-1-20-2, Shahzad 6-0-29-0, McGrath 9-1-22-2, Rashid 4-0-12-0
