Bournemouth face Havant in the in the ECB Cockspur Cup club championship regional semi-final on June 18.

National semi-finalists last season, Havant comfortably beat Basingstoke & North Hants by 69 runs, while a youthful Bournemouth side surprised Portsmouth at Chapel Gate.

But there was no third round joy for Ventnor, who were thwarted by a gallant Reading fightback at Steephill.

Relegated from the Home Counties Premier League last season, Basingstoke lacked application after containing Havant to 183-7 (Ollie Jones 40).

Their top order rolled over against Richard Pineo (3-32), James Ingram (2-17) and Jez Ord (1-16), and there was no way back from 57-7.

At least John Govett (34) and Nigel Williamson (17) applied themselves to lift Basingstoke final total to 114 (Phil Loat 3-18).

Former Dorset cricketer Martin Miller saluted Bournemouth's "young lions" for their part in a fine 23-run third round win over Portsmouth at Chapel Gate.

"We had six or seven Under-21s in our side and some of them, particularly the bowlers, played a significant part in the result," Miller said.

Runs were always at a premium in the damp Chapel Gate surroundings and Bournemouth owed much to Miller (38) himself for underpinning the top order.

Bournemouth, in some difficulty at 85-5, almost doubled their fine total through Matt Tatchell's unbeaten 36, the bulk of which were scored during a decisive sixth-wicket stand with Simon Ridley (21).

Bournemouth's young bowlers earned their spurs in the evening session, with the experience of left-armer Matt Mixer (2-18) rubbing off on the others.

Dan Joseph (2-26), Alex Kennedy (2-27) and Simon Ridley (2-16) all made inroads into the Portsmouth batting, which creaked at 43-5 and fell well short of its target at 132 all out.

"It was a terrific session in the field and will have lifted spirits considerably after our double Premier League setback the previous day," Miller said.

Ventnor must have thought they had a group semi-final slot in the bag when they reduced Reading to 94-6 after posting 210-5 themselves.

But the Berkshire side fought their way out of trouble to win without further loss.

Matt Compton (81), aided by Ian Hilsum (42) and Martin Blackman (33), eased Ventnor to 210-5 before Reading's top order folded against the island medium-pacemen.

Charlie Freeston (2-41) and Matt Compton (2-42) each took a brace of wickets as Reading stumbled, only to be revived by an unbroken seventh- wicket stand between Vishal Aeri (71) and Sameer Patel (47), which wrested the initiative from Ventnor's grasp.

Reading's reward is a group semi-final home tie against Finchampstead, who beat Falkland by 98 runs.
