Shaun Udal is ready to captain Hampshire's Twenty20 team in tomorrow's C & G Trophy dead rubber.

Shane Warne returns to Australia for treatment on his injured shoulder tomorrow, so Udal will captain the side after being left out of the team that lost to Durham in the championship this week.

Manager Paul Terry has named a young squad also missing Sean Ervine (knee), James Bruce (shoulder), Nic Pothas (virus) and Jimmy Adams. It means there are likely to be chances for several fringe players to prove themselves worthy of a chance in the Twenty20 team that plays Hampshire's first game of the competition against Sussex at Arundel on Tuesday.

Michael Brown is in contention for what would be his C & G Trophy debut, while Jono McLean is in the first team squad for the first time this season, and Twenty20 specialist Mitchell Stokes is also in the 13.

Udal said: "There is nothing on the game but at least it gives players the chance to prove themselves and playing against Glamorgan will be decent practice for next week. Hopefully players like Nic Pothas, James Bruce and Sean Ervine will come into contention later in the tournament."

Hampshire's final C & G Trophy game has highlighted the ludicrous decision to change the competition's original knockout format.

Udal added: "I was not a fan of playing two leagues from the start. There were always going to be a lot of meaningless games."

Hampshire are expecting a smaller Rose Bowl crowd than usual tomorrow because of the county's C & G Trophy exit against Sussex and the fact that the World Cup second round match between England and Ecuador kicks off at 4pm.

But Udal added: "Hopefully people will still come down and support us, they can watch for a few hours and then come back after the football."

Meanwhile, the Daily Echo have teamed up with Hampshire Cricket to give readers the chance to win an adult Twenty20 passport, which allows the winner to attend all four Rose Bowl Twenty20 matches and is usually worth £40, as well as two pairs of tickets to the first home match on Thursday against Middlesex.
