Shaun Udal blamed himself for Hampshire's latest defeat against Sussex despite finishing with his best ever Twenty20 bowling analysis.
Udal's four overs cost just 13 runs and included the wicket of Sean Heather.
But he admitted that his decision to let the relatively inexperienced Greg Lamb bowl the 18th over turned the game.
Off spinner Lamb's first over cost just five runs but his second cost 20 and swung the game back in Sussex's favour after Hampshire had looked set to win their opening Twenty20 game for the first time since the first-ever Twenty20 match against Sussex at The Rose Bowl three years ago.
Udal said: "We got it a bit wrong at the end and paid the price.
"Hindsight is a great thing but maybe Greg Lamb should not have bowled a second over, but that was my call.
"I thought it was going to be his day, he batted brilliantly, and he bowled an exceptional first over and I had a gut feeling that I went with."
