Hampshire fought back bravely on the second day of their LV= County Championship match against Yorkshire at The Rose Bowl.

Recalled seamer David Balcombe (10.1-4-20-3) produced an outstanding post-lunch spell as Yorkshire were bowled out for 415.

And Jimmy Adams (82) and Neil McKenzie (48*) continued their Trent Bridge form as Hampshire reached 162 for 3 at stumps.

When Yorkshire resumed on 300 for 3 on another hot day at the Rose Bowl, a huge total beckoned. But within 15 overs, three catches for Nic Pothas reduced the visitors to 337 for 6.

James Tomlinson (9-1-25-2) and Dominic Cork (10-3-28-1) claimed the big wickets of Anthony McGrath (64) and Andrew Gale (56).

And Pothas pulled off a diving catch to ensure a second bowling point, and hand Tomlinson the wicket of Jonathan Bairstow, in the next over.

But Adil Rashid carried on where he left off at Basingstoke last year, when he made an unbeaten 117 in Yorkshire’s innings victory.

By lunch, he and Richard Pyrah had added 56 but had not added to the total when Balcombe struck for the first time.

James Vince fielded at first slip after one drop too many from Adams.

And he held on when Pyrah (8) nicked the third ball of the afternoon session.

Soon after reaching an 80-ball fifty, Rashid (51) edged a drive against another Balcombe away swinger.

And after Rangana Herath claimed his first wicket of the match, Balcombe completed the first innings by splaying Oliver Hannon-Dalby’s stumps.

After a solid 49-run opening stand between Adams and Michael Carberry, Rashid struck in successive overs during a three-over spell shortly before tea.

Carberry (19) miscued when he attemped to flick the leg-spinner off his legs, handing his England Lions teammate a return catch high to his left.

Several high-profile Twenty20 blasts after his last Championship appearance eight months ago, Lumb (0) top edged an attempted pull with no addition to the score.

But a 94-run stand between Adams and McKenzie frustrated a Yorkshire side desperate to return to winning ways after last week’s defeat at Somerset.

With six overs remaining of a day truncated by bad light, Adams edged 6ft 8in Oliver Hannon-Dalby, a spindly 20-year-old from Halifax, to Jacques Rudolph at first slip.

But James Vince (8*) helped McKenzie shepherd Hampshire to the close with no further loss, needing a further 204 to avoid the follow on.
