Hampshire manager Giles White has played down his interest in Warwickshire’s former England wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.
Ambrose, who played the last of his 11 Tests 15 months ago, is out of favour at Warwickshire and out of contract at the end of the season.
Hampshire are reported to have responded by submitting a formal 28-day approach for the 27-year-old, but White insists he is happy with the squad’s current wicketkeeping options.
Nic Pothas will be 37 later this year but remains one of the fittest players on the Hampshire staff and in England under-19 wicket-keeper-batsman Michael Bates, the county have one of the best young glovemen in the country.
White said: “We’re obviously very happy with our wicketkeeping options at the moment and Nic’s one of the best around.
“There are a number of players who become available at the end of each season. We write letters to any county when they have a player of note who becomes available but I haven’t spoken to Tim Ambrose.”
Ambrose, pictured, was dropped last week after scoring just 128 runs at 11.6 in the LV= County Championship this season.
His 54 in Warwickshire’s win against Hampshire at Edgbaston two months ago is his only significant score this season and he has now been rested from all cricket.
Warwickshire director of cricket Ashley Giles believes Ambrose is still recovering from the effects of his England omission last year.
He said: “I’m not totally sure when we expect Tim to play again, we will monitor that.
“He’s had a tough 12 months and international experience can do that to you. The pressures of playing international cricket are very different to the county game and he’s found that difficult.
“You can go your whole life wanting to play for England and then maybe the experience is not what you thought it was or you get left out and it can knock you back.”
