Michael Carberry has been assured that his England career is not over.

Carberry won his solitary Test cap in Bangladesh ten months ago but did not get the chance to make any more appearances in the summer as England persisted with Alastair Cook, despite his poor form at the time.

The Hampshire batsman, right, sighed “that ship has sailed” when asked about his England ambitions in August.

Last month, he suffered from a blood clot and shortness of breath that prevented him from travelling to Australia for a month with the England Performance Programme.

And Cook vindicated the faith shown in him with his match-saving 235 not out in the opening Ashes Test in Brisbane and a first innings 148 in the second Test at Adelaide.

But national selector Geoff Miller has assured Carberry he is still an England contender.

“Michael’s an outstanding talent and he’s very much on our radar to play for England when he’s fully fit and firing,” said Miller.
