Revenge was sweet for Southern Electric Premier League title chasers South Wilts.

They avenged a surprise early season defeat by Alton by winning their final Time pennant match of the season by a healthy 92-run margin at the Jubilee Ground.

Alton, who have enjoyed their share of success against South Wilts in recent seasons, raised an eyebrow or two with an eight-run victory at Bemerton in June.

But there was little likelihood of a repeat result once South Wilts posted 266-7 on the emerald green Jubilee surface.

New Zealander Dewayne Bowden responded with a boundary-strewn century, but Alton had only one other batsman in double figures and fell to 176 all out.

South Wilts won six of their eight completed Time pennant games to win the all-day ‘flag’ for a fifth time since 208.

Soon-to-depart Zimbabwean teen Ryan Burl (63) and Tom Cowley (29) gave South Wilts a positive 67-run start before three wickets fell quickly.

But James Hayward, in such a rich vein of form, added 53 with Burl before the young African was caught behind.

Hayward went on to make 80 and, with support from Joe Cranch (30), James Hibberd and Owen Alsop, saw South Wilts to 266-7.

Hibberd, relishing the lush green surrounds, weighed in with a spell of 5-17 in 11 overs as Alton sipped to 8-6.

Bowden produced a one-man response for Alton, hitting three sixes and 16 fours in a fine 113, his first Premier League century.

All around him failed as Alton slipped to174 all out and a sixth defeat of the season.
