St Cross Symondians are all but mathematically assured of ECB Southern Electric Premier League survival after their match with bottom-of-the-table Bournemouth was washed out at tea.
They had batted themselves into a virtually unassailable position at 277-4 when rain forced the game to be abandoned at the halfway stage, writes MIKE VIMPANY.
The ‘no result’ leaves St Cross 34 points clear of Bournemouth with two matches left to play.
If Bournemouth – now without Australian all-rounder Alex Keath – manage to pick up maximum points from their remaining games with Lymington (Saturday) and Bashley (Rydal), St Cross will need another ten points to survive.
George Adair led the way for St Cross, hitting 99 before his 123-run second-wicket partnership with Bill Walsh (73 not out) ended one run short of his second Premier Division hundred of the season.
Ed Green weighed in with 54 as St Cross went on to post 277-4 before rain came down after one ball of the Bournemouth reply.
St Cross Symondians play their penultimate match at Havant before winding up their summer with a visit from Alton, who were 53-0 (Scott Myers 28) when the match against Ventnor at Newclose was rained off.
Totton & Eling had lost half their wickets for 97 (Dave Taylor 45) against Havant, while only a handful of overs were bowled before the other matches (Academy v Havant) and Lymington against Bashley (Rydal) were washed out.
