The long wait is over for Winchester City.

After weeks of struggle, Steve Moss' men finally notched their second win of the season 3-2 at Thatcham Town last night.

It means their only two victories to date in the BGB Southern Division 1 South & West have been against the sides that came up with them from the Wessex League.

They had already beaten Andover in the first week of the season.

With Melvin Rogers sidelined by a chipped ankle bone and Sean Thurgood pulling out for family reasons, Winchester were forced to hurry back defenders Mark Jones and Franny Dolan from injury.

It was Jones' slip that presented Thatcham with a fifth-minute lead before Dolan was forced off with hamstring trouble.

Dolan's replacement, Tom Vavrecka, volleyed in the equaliser from the edge of the box, but Thatcham reclaimed the lead in the second half after turning City's Dan Wakefield inside out.

Jones responded by levelling from a corner and Mark Gamble sidefooted home the winner after Ian Mancey had squared the ball across.

The win lifts City a place to third from bottom going into Saturday's home game with Brook House.

"I'm delighted," said Moss. "We had all sorts of problems with players pulling out, but the boys showed a lot of character and battled on.

"Thatcham missed a couple of open goals but I hope they'd be honest enough to admit that we had a lot of chances."
