Eastleigh suffered spot-kick heartbreak as they went out of the FA Trophy 4-2 on penalties against AFC Wimbledon at The Silverlake Stadium last night.

The third qualifying round replay seemed to be drifting beyond the Spitfires when they fell 2-1 behind in the first period of extra-time.

They had initially led through ex-Saint David Hughes in normal time before conceding an equaliser moments before full-time.

But a late extra-time Steve West equaliser took the game, watched by a crowd of 613, into a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

There, misses from Darren Wheeler and Hughes meant it was Wimbledon who will travel to face Conference side Aldershot in the first round proper.

Last night's defeat, coupled with the loss of defenders Rob Marshall and Chris Collins through injury, left Eastleigh boss Paul Doswell bemoaning his side's lack of fortune this season.

"It is a big disappointment to go out on penalties and it just about sums up the way our season has gone, especially to lose both centre-halfs as well," he rued.

"Chris looks like he has fractured a rib, which will put him out for three or four weeks, and Robbie has got a hamstring injury, so again that could be as much as a month out.

"We knew it wasn't going to be an easy game but we are just on the wrong end of a penalty result tonight."
