New Eastleigh boss Jason Dodd got his managerial career off to a winning start in the Hampshire Senior Cup last night.
The former Saints skipper does not kid himself that a 1-0 extra time win over VT FC is the cure for the Spitfires' Conference South ills, but it was a step in the right direction.
It took 115 minutes for Eastleigh to break the Wessex side's resistance when Andy Forbes managed to stay on his feet and squeeze a low shot past keeper Scott O'Rourke amid a goalmouth scramble.
After a night laden with glorious gilt-edged chances, it was an irony that it was one of the scrappier efforts that finally went in.
"It wasn't fantastic tonight but there was a lot of our play that I was happy with," said Dodd. "We gave the players a game plan and they went out and put it into action.
"We had a few players out and a few low on confidence and it wasn't pretty, but I'm just pleased for them that we got a result."
