CARL Wilson-Denis shrugged off a festive stomach bug to spectacularly fire Eastleigh towards a much-needed league double over beleaguered Basingstoke Town at the Silverlake Stadium yesterday.
The 23-year-old marksman, signed from Conference South rivals Havant & Waterlooville last month, began the new year in style with a cracking shot on the turn which powered in off the post to put the Spitfires 2-1 up after 49 minutes.
It was a blow from which bottom-of-the-table Basingstoke never really recovered.
Their 3-1 defeat was another kick in the teeth for despairing Dragons' boss Francis Vines, whose luckless side are now four points adrift at the foot of the table with just one league win to their credit.
Eastleigh, in contrast, finally look to have turned the corner on the poor run of form that has seriously threatened their Conference South status.
Under new manager Jason Dodd, they look a more solid unit and improved results, coupled with the return of midfield powerhouse Steve Forbes and defender Chris Collins, have brought some much-needed confidence flooding back to the ranks.
