West Brom striker Kevin Phillips is dreading a penalty shoot-out in this afternoon's Championship play-off final at Wembley.
The Baggies take on Derby with promotion to the Premiership, as well as an estimated £60m from increased revenues, guaranteed to the victors.
But the former Saints hitman - who has 22 goals to his credit in all competitions so far this season - is refusing to contemplate what awaits the losers.
Phillips and Sunderland lost the 1998 final when Charlton won after a penalty shoot-out, although the 33-year-old had been substituted by that stage.
He had scored the second of the Black Cats' goals during regular and extra time which finished with the sides deadlocked at 4-4 before the Addicks won the shoot-out 7-6 after Michael Gray failed to convert for the Wearsiders.
And Phillips said: "I scored a goal to beat Brian Clough's Sunderland record for goals in a season but we ended up losing.
"It was probably the worst afternoon of my career - to have worked so hard for those extra weeks at the end of the season but for it to have come to nothing.
"Remembering how badly that hurt me has definitely motivated me this time around because I never want to experience anything like that again."
