Home town boy Robbie Matthews powered Salisbury City towards their first ever Blue Square Conference Premier victory in front of an appreciative 1,310 Old Sarum crowd last night.
After a disappointing 0-0 draw at ten-man Droylsden on Saturday, the newly-promoted Whites roared back from behind to see off Liam Daish's Ebbsfleet United (formerly Gravesend & Northfleet) 2-1 on a rain-swept evening in Wiltshire.
"It was a very good result for us," reflected City coach Tommy Widdrington. "With all due respect to Droylsden, Ebbsfleet are a far better yardstick. Liam and his crew only just missed out on the play-offs last season and yet tonight you wouldn't have known which team had just turned professional and which one had been pro for some time.
"All the things we didn't get right on Saturday, we got right tonight - and that was mostly being positive in the final third. We showed great character to dominate the first half. As a coach, it was very pleasing."
