HARTLEPOOL United have been deducted three points for fielding a suspended player in their League One match against Brighton.
Today’s Football League ruling comes after Pools selected Gary Liddle for the 2-0 win against Gus Poyet’s side on April 5 when he should have been serving the first game of a two-match ban.
Liddle had collected his tenth yellow card of the season in the previous match, at Leyton Orient.
The points have been deducted with immediate effect and move Hartlepool just one point clear of the relegation zone going into the final day of the season on Saturday.
The club has also been given a £10,000 suspended fine and been ordered to pay the costs of the Football Disciplinary Commission, which reached the decision.
Hartlepool have 28 days to appeal.
