EASTLEIGH emphatically notched their first win of pre-season at Wantage Town tonight.
Richard Hill’s Conference South outfit raced 2-0 up inside seven minutes against last season’s Hellenic Premier runners-up and, having been pegged back to 2-1 at half-time by Tom Melledew, went on to record a 6-1 victory.
Chris Todd and Michael Green struck early for the Spitfires, followed by second-half goals from Jai Reason, Damian Scannell and trialists Chris Dillon and Jack Ross.
Dillon, a former Christchurch player, recently returned from Australia while winger Ross has been released by Oxford United. Hill also cast an eye over 23-year-old former Welling and Bromley forward Sanchez Ming, who played right-back.
Conference National new boys Salisbury City lost 1-0 to a late Ryan Woodford header at Havant & Waterlooville. The Hawks included two ex-Saints -goalkeeper Scott Bevan and defender Pele - in their starting line-up.
Sydenhams Wessex champions Blackfield & Langley had been due to visit Conference South outfit Dorchester, but pulled out through lack of players.
“We’ve got no reserves this year, our under-18s are under-16s and we’ve got a very small squad,” explained manager Glenn Burnett.
“We had a coach booked and paid for tonight, but we had some players on holiday, some working and a few injury niggles and I’ve got to look after the lads.
“As much as I apologise, there’s nothing I can do.”
Hythe & Dibden saw off Lymington Town 2-0 courtesy of Alex Liburd and Sean Stone, while Brockenhurst edged Colden Common 2-1 through Carlo Tate and an own goal.
