SHOLING thrashed Romsey Town 5-0 in their Sydenhams Wessex Premier Division opener at the Silverlake Arena tonight.
Goals from Danny Cox, Byron Mason, Barry Mason and a Lee Wort double got the Wessex title favourites home and made it two wins and an astonishing 14 goals from two games, writes Peter Howard.
Kevin Brewster delivered a precision corner which was met by Cox’s leaping header to put the home side 1-0 up within ten minutes.
The second came in exquisite fashion as skipper Byron Mason crisply turned centre-back Craig Bryant on the edge of the box before unleashing a pile-driver into the bottom left of the net past a flailing Brad Snelling in the Romsey goal.
Brewster was the provider for number three as he floated a ball into the path of Wort who thumped a header against the crossbar before finishing off the rebound.
After the break Danny Barker’s men had a brief spell of pressure – Jamie Bulpitt, Jack Garner and Danny Phillips all linking well to feed in Jordan Sako who gave Matt Brown in the Sholing net a rare shot to deal with.
Barry Mason then put the game beyond any doubt just past the hour as he cleverly turned Bulpitt, before powering the ball past Snelling.
The young Romsey keeper frustrated Ashley Jarvis and Wort with good saves, but could do nothing about Wort’s second – as the Sholing striker grabbed his sixth goal of the season
