Alresford won 3-0 at Whitchurch United to keep their faint Sydenhams Premier Division title hopes on track. Steve Hall, Andy Mott and Warren Bentley got the goals in the table-toppers victory in their penultimate game of the season and push them five points clear at the summit.
Favourites Sholing have four games in hand and need nine points from those matches to win the league and condemn Alresford to a second successive runners-up spot. The match had an end of season feel to it, after the Magpies confirmed a top two finish with a 2-0 win against AFC Portchester on Saturday.
It wasn’t until the hour mark that Hall tapped in at the back-post after the ball had been cut across from the left.
Mott netted after Bentley unselfishly squared in the box for a tap-in. The prolific striker then got his 54th goal of the campaign, bending the ball into the corner.
“It was a close contest,” said departing Alresford boss Danny Robinson. “It did meander in parts but it’s important to push our points tally higher.
“We want to push Sholing all the way.”
