ALRESFORD Town’s Dominic Cope ensured Sholing’s champagne was put on ice.
The Magpies winger struck a last-minute winner to ensure the club won Danny Robinson and Tim Cole’s last league game in charge, 3-2 against Moneyfields.
Two-goal Stuart Green twice gave the visitors the lead, starting with a second-minute header. Cope equalised midway through the first half, when Warren Bentley’s shot was beaten away by Dave Hook.
Hook prevented Bentley from adding to his 54 league and cup goals with several fine saves before the impressive Green restored Moneys’ lead, after a weak back-header by Stuart Mott, in the 63rd minute. With 15 minutes remaining, Alresford levelled again. Chris Manning fired in through a ruck of players after Bentley and Glasspool were denied. Then came the dramatic late winner. Bentley held the ball up and fed Steve Hall, whose low ball into the danger area gave the delighted Cope the chance to hammer it into the roof of the net.
Alresford co-manager Robinson said: “The performance epitomised our season, flashes of quality along with lots of grit and determination. “Moneyfields are a really good side, the best we’ve played all season when they beat us at their place. “Hopefully they can play like that tomorrow. But I can’t see Sholing not winning at least one of their last three games.”
Winchester City-bound Robinson and Cole finish their time at Alresford with the Aldershot Senior Cup Final against Camberley Town on Wednesday and the Wessex League Cup final against Petersfield Town on Bank Holiday Monday.
