Sholing got their first win of the Southern League South & West Division One campaign in a 2-1 over Stratford Town in a scrappy match at the Silverlake Arena.

At half-time it was goalless, but a dangerous Barry Mason cross picked out summer signing from Alresford Town Stuart Mott to tap home.

A rare mistake in the Boatmen backline saw Tyrone Fagin slot the ball past Matt Brown to level the match.

But Mott was at it again as he latched on to substitute Kevin Brewster’s cross at the back post to knock home the winner to ensure Sholing remain unbeaten after three matches.

Co-manager Dave Fear said: “It wasn’t a very good game of football.

“But I think we had the better chances and thoroughly deserved the win to be fair.

“It was just pleasing to get the home win, get the three points and remain unbeaten.”

Meanwhile, Steve Riley’s AFC Totton suffered their first defeat of the South & West season after wins against Clevedon Town and Wantage.

They were defeated 3-1 by now league leaders Yate Town. It was goalless at half-time but Tom Warren’s goal and a brace by Jake Jackson saw the away side take victory.

The Stags are back in action at the Testwood Stadium on Tuesday night against Swindon Supermarine, while Sholing visit Wimborne Town (both 7.45pm).
