THE joy of Sholing’s first win of the Southern One South & West campaign was quickly followed by their first defeat.

After seeing off Stratford Town 2-1 on Saturday, the Boatmen were brought crashing back to earth with a heavy 3-0 reverse at Wimborne Town.

Summing up a grim night for the reigning Sydenhams League/FA Vase champions at Cuthbury, secretary Greg Dickson admitted: “We were very poor and lacked a bit of passion. Once the second goal went in, it destroyed us – but we live to fight another day.”

With TJ Cuthbertson away and Sam Olaofe injured, Sholing were limited in defence – plus they were robbed of the attacking spark of Barry Mason, victim of a poor tackle against Stratford.

They fell 1-0 behind on 41 minutes when Wimborne’s Sam Griffin won a challenge with Matt Brown. Sholing skipper Bryon Mason protested for a foul on the ’keeper, but was booked for his troubles.

George Webb caught the visitors cold from the restart to double the Magpies’ advantage and, following a foul by Stuart Mott which saw the Sholing defender cautioned, substitute Jamie Davison buried Wimborne’s third.

Alex Sawyer went closest to replying for Sholing, having his best effort cleared off the line, while sub Nick Watts had a decent attempt saved.

With five points banked from four games, the Boatmen will attempt to get back to winning ways at home to Yate Town on Saturday before Monday’s big derby at AFC Totton.
