WHITCHURCH United could be enjoying the view from the Sydenhams Premier summit if they see off league leaders Petersfield Town at Longmeadow tomorrow.
Victory for Carl Bennett’s surprise packages would take them top on goal difference with two games in hand.
Whitchurch didn’t get a mention when managers were making their pre-season title tips, yet ten games in they are the only unbeaten side in the league.
That run was extended on Saturday when they saw off Newport IoW 3-1 at Longmeadow.
Ex-Romsey striker Danny Phillips took just five minutes to get them off the mark, spinning on the edge of the area before smashing home. Newport came out firing after the break, but Josh Harfield struck against the run of play to put the Jam Boys two up and, five minutes later, Josh Green made it 3-0 from the spot.
The third-placed Islanders kept going with substitute Liam Triggs capitalising on a defensive error late on.
Next up for Port is Saturday’s home game against Hamworthy United who lost a seven-goal thriller at Folland Sports.
Ryan Long (2), Ashley Jarvis and Richard Gregory struck for Follands with Dom Allen, Russell Cook and sub Greg Horlock hitting back for the Hammers who have now lost four on the bounce in league and cup Follands, seventh, host in-form AFC Portchester tonight.
