An away tie against Pompey at Fratton Park on November 8.

That’s Gosport Borough’s dream when the FA Cup first round proper draw is made live on BBC2 tomorrow night at 7pm.

Gosport are in the first round hat for the first time in their history after comfortably brushing aside Western League side Willand Rovers 3-1 in South Devon.

Now Borough boss Alex Pike, who managed Gosport to last season’s FA Trophy final at Wembley, wants to create more history for the Privett Park club.

“I like being a history maker and it is another achievement that you can now tick off the bucket list,” he said.

“Pompey away would be a great draw for us. I don’t think we have ever played them competitively. It’s only across the water and it would be a full house!

Three goals in a 15-minute spell either side of half-time wrapped it up for Gosport, who bossed the game for long periods.

A heavy, uncut pitch and a near 1,000 crowd – almost one-third of the population of Willand, a village nestled high on sheep grazed Exmoor – craning for a view from the crammed touchlines, looked to be the ideal setting for a cup upset.

But, in truth, Willand, the competition’s lowest ranked side, seldom looked capable of causing a shock.

“This was Willand’s cup final, playing at home and in front of a big crowd, so it was important we saw out the opening 25 minutes, got a foothold in the game and went on from there,” Pike said.

“To be honest, once our second goal went in, we were never in danger and, to be honest, I was disappointed they scored.

“They were strong and physical – we expected that – but our movement killed them.”

Gosport had only one real escape in before Mike Carter and Matt Paterson scored the two late first-half goals which paved the route into tonight’s televised cup draw.

James Blake wasted that opportunity when he burst through and sent a weak shot to Nathan Ashmore’s left, which the goalkeeper saved without undue concern.

Two goals in eight minutes immediately before half-time knocked Willand out of the contest.

Dan Wooden created the opener, making progress down the left before threading a pass inside for Justin Bennett to set up Carter.

The former Sholing Vase winner made no mistake, burying his shot into the bottom corner before – four minutes later – setting up Patterson’s second.

Gosport scored a decisive third goal shortly after half-time.

Bennett got on the end of Wooden’s left-side corner, but the ball hit the underside of the bar before bouncing down for Steve Ramsey to make it 3-0.

Luke Alden pulled a goal back as Willand launched an unsuccessful late comeback – one doomed to failure once Luke Durham was sent off for a second bookable offence.
