SAINTS fan Brett Williams is dreaming of scoring the winner against Pompey.
The Aldershot striker will make the short journey from his Hedge End home to Fratton Park for tomorrow afternoon’s FA Cup first-round Hampshire derby.
“It’s the best draw we could have got, with Aldershot being the county’s Army town, Portsmouth being a naval city and the game being played on Remembrance Sunday,” says the former Eastleigh forward.
“The whole club is buzzing about it, especially myself and [Shots defender] Joe Oastler, who’s such a big Pompey fan he’s got the club’s badge tattooed on his leg!
“I first saw Saints at The Dell when I was really young and for a couple of years I had a season ticket with my dad in the Itchen Stand, when Gordon Strachan was manager.
“I saw us beat Pompey at St Mary’s more than once and we also went to the 2003 FA Cup final.
“It’s obviously harder to get to games now but I saw us beat Fulham last season.”
Williams will have bragging rights over friends and family should Aldershot produce a similar result to the last meeting between the sides 32 years ago (the Shots were in the old Division Four when they won an FA Cup second -round tie 3-1 against a Pompey side that went on to win the old Division Three title).
“My best mate and two older half-brothers both support Pompey but I don’t go in for the banter as much as some Saints fans,” says 26 year-old Williams, who went to Wildern School.
“I’m more of a football fan and would love to see Pompey back in the Premier League one day.
“I still see it as a big club and their fans are great. It’s a shame they’re in League Two because it would be great to have that rivalry going again.”
A former Saints trialist, Southampton-born Williams has scored 31 goals in 60 games for Aldershot since moving from Northampton Town 15 months ago.
After brief stints at Winchester City and AFC Totton and a third spell at Eastleigh, he did not make a first-team appearance following his big move to Reading.
But after five starts and two goals on loan at Rotherham United, he scored three more League Two goals in three months at Northampton Town - including a 90th-minute winner against local rivals Oxford United.
Another derby goal tomorrow would surpass that as the highlight of his career so far.
