Corhampton’s Scott Gregory has been rewarded after reaching this summer’s English Amateur Championship final with a call-up into the England A squad for 2015.
The 20-year-old, who only broke into the Hampshire first team this year, lost to Huddersfield’s Nick Marsh at Saunton, in Devon, after a gutsy display in the 36-hole final, having gone close to winning the Hampshire Hog and the Berkshire Trophy earlier in the year.
Gregory, pictured, helped Hampshire reach the Daily Telegraph South East Group League final in October, although captain Steve Williams’ team lost out to Essex, and a week later the Corhampton ace helped the Hampshire Colts gain revenge by beating Essex in the under-21 league final, at Hendon.
Gregory also finished seventh in the England Golf Order of Merit, ahead of 12 members of next year’s full England squad.
Scott follows clubmate Neil Raymond into the England set-up – the latter was a late developer when he was named in the full England squad in 2011, winning the Brabazon Trophy back-to-back in 2011 and 2012, before making his Walker Cup debut against America, in Southampton, New York, in 2013.
Meon Valley’s Harry Ellis, who has just started his first full season on a golf scholarship at Florida State University, is one of five American-based members of the full England Squad, which includes Gregory’s conqueror, Marsh.
In 2012, Ellis broke Nick Faldo’s record to become the youngest ever winner of the English Amateur Championship, at just 16, when the final was held at Silloth-on-Solway.
He was first capped at under-16 level, in 2011, and played in the men’s Home Intenationals in 2012, after his win in Cumbria.
Last year, Ellis was a member of England’s team at the European Boys Championship, and also played in the Boys Home Internationals.
