Totton’s Aaron Phipps has been voted the Most Valuable Player in the Great Britain Coloplast Wheelchair Rugby Super Series.
Aaron, who has played wheelchair rugby since 2009, has represented the UK on numerous occasions including the 2012 London Paralympics.
The sport, nicknamed ‘murderball’, is highly skilled and involves full metal-to-metal contact between players.
Alongside his hectic training schedule for the sport, Aaron is also an Athlete Mentor in the South East for Sky Sports Living for Sport, a free UK secondary schools initiative delivered in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust.
The Coloplast Wheelchair Rugby Super Series season awards celebrate and honour the exceptional performance of wheelchair rugby players across the year, awarding a winner for each individual league.
Phipps said: “I am delighted to have been recognised for my commitment and skills in wheelchair rugby.
“I have only been participating in wheelchair sport since 2007, several years after I lost my legs through contracting meningitis.
“To now be able to say I have a professional sporting career is amazing.
“It is this journey that I hope will inspire the students who I work with through Sky Sports Living for Sport.
“The initiative gives me the unique opportunity to share my story, explain the challenges I have faced and prove that with focus and determination you can achieve your goals.”
Sky Sports Living for Sport uses sport stars and sport skills to improve the lives of thousands of secondary school pupils across the UK.
