DESPITE the wet conditions, Trojans - powered by ex-Bedford second row Dave Wells - put on a display of top-class rugby to overwhelm Southampton 32-5.

Wells gave the home team's pack extra oomph up front and they used this to set up a good platform for their backs.

Trojans' best scores came from Aaron Surtees and Jarred McCarroll, who finished off an excellent team move on his farewell appearance for the club.

Winning coach Pete Surtees said: "Fair play to Southampton. They made us work hard for the win.

"We played really well as a team and it would be unfair to single out any one individual for praise - all the guys performed."

Ellingham & Ringwood entertained Farnborough at a very soggy Picket Post - a running game seemingly out of the question.

Ellingham, however, had other ideas and set their backs free early on. Moving into Farnborough's 22, they set up a maul and pushed it all the way over the line with Andy Headley touching down. Andy Weeks converted.

On seven minutes, Ellingham again used their backs and got the ball wide for winger Ross Whale to touch down in the corner and, on 15 minutes, Rich Major burst through to finish another fine backs move after the forwards had secured clean quick ball. Weeks converted.

Soon after, Derek Webb scored Ellingham's fourth try, with Weeks again adding the extras.

Major rounded off a dominant first-half performance with his second try and Week's fourth conversion made it 33-0 at half-time.

There was little respite for Farnborough in the second period, Ellingham ramming home their advantage with further tries from skipper Robbie Mitchell, Webb and Rob Padfield making the final score 54-0.

Ellingham captain Mitchell was glad that his team had clicked: "We have been threatening to do this to a team all season," adding "we have been guilty of not finishing off sides, so I was pleased today when we just kept turning the screw.

"We just did the simple things well, defended properly and our backs showed what they can do when we secure good ball and release them."

Fareham Heathens overcame New Milton after falling behind to a breakaway try and an early penalty.

Heathens built up strong pressure to claw back the half-time score to 10-6 thanks to the boot of Niall Allerdice.

Second-half pressure brought two more Allerdice penalties to clinch victory.

Heathens skipper Ed Monk said: "We should have run in a couple of tries but the lads worked hard and you can't ask for more than that."

Weakened Eastleigh lost at Alton.

Despite Russ Smith and James Hixon-Broad dominating the lineouts, Eastleigh were overpowered in the loose.

The hosts ran in eight tries - four in each half - and allied to 17 points from the boot of Oliphant, powered to a 52-0 victory.

Rees (2), Gay (2), Jones, Carter, Oliphant and Davies were Alton's try scorers.

Portsmouth overcame Barnes in a thrilling encounter.

After going behind early on, tries by Alexei Avsenev and Oae Ofuasia gave the Portsmouth side a half-time lead of 17-15.

Despite playing large parts of the second half with 14 men because of two sin-binnings, Portsmouth extended their lead to win 30-22.

Portsmouth coach Nigel Morgan said: "We deserved the result, the lads played really well."
