Eastleigh earned the bragging rights around town when they defeated arch rivals Trojans in the sides’ first league meeting in six years.
The clubs came face-to-face in London 3 South-West at Stoneham Park where clear favourites Eastleigh proved their worth.
The visitors dominated most of the match and ended up returning to their Bishopstoke Road headquarters with a well-deserved 34-0 victory.
Eastleigh could have, and should have, sewn the contest up a lot earlier but missed chances, along with with some dogged Trojans defending, kept them to just 5-0 up at half-time – Adam Gallagher crossing the line on two minutes after the backs produced a break off of a scrum.
With the wind in their favour, Eastleigh increased their lead at the start of the second half with Stu Mason touching down and Phil Baldwin converting.
Moments later Baldwin’s clearance kick was fumbled by a Trojans player and Chris Cove pounced on the loose ball to cross for Eastleigh.
The game was stopped for about ten minutes as injured Trojans hooker Andy Flack was carefully stretchered off and taken to hospital with a neck injury.
The delay did little to dent Eastleigh’s concentration and it was not long before Rich O’Donnell crossed in the corner to bring up the visitors’ bonus point try.
They increased that with a Baldwin penalty and touched down for the final time when they drove towards the Trojans line and O’Donnell grounded the ball for the second time.
Delighted Eastleigh captain Paul Fudio said: “It was a tough game and Trojans were a solid side.
“At half-time we felt we were giving away a few too many penalties and that was something we wanted to correct, which we did in the second half.
“It was a feisty game but we knew it was going to be tough.”
Happily there was good news to report on Trojans’ injury.
Chairman Shaun Magill said: “Young Mr Flack did go to hospital but was released later that night with tenderness of the neck.
“I’m just pleased we have a great medical team headed by Dr Suzi Le Voi. We’re all pleased it turned out not to be anything serious.”
Eastleigh are already looking forward to their next league fixture in two weeks when they have the chance to move back to the top by beating current leaders Old Tiffinians at Bishopstoke Road.
Tiffinians recorded another victory Saturday, defeating New Forest side Ellingham & Ringwood 48-12 in Surrey.
Forwards Mark Hutchinson and Tim Linford scored Es’ tries and Mark Burrett kicked a conversion.
