SOUTHAMPTON’S Mike Golding is reining in the Vendée Globe leaders after being polled as the fastest of the first ten boats overnight.
Golding’s Ecover 3 was more than three knots quicker than race leader Loick Peyron as he closed the gap on nearest yacht PRB sailed by Frenchman Vincent Riou.
Despite his solid sixth position, Golding still has concerns about his boat.
“I might seem relaxed on the outside but to be honest I’m still stressed about the boat,” he said.
“She gives me all sorts of concerns but my biggest concern is that I’m still waiting for something to break.”
The leading boats are now approaching two high pressure systems which could see them slow right down.
“I could easily see the race re-starting in about three days,” Golding said. “This could mix things up a little.”
