THE RYA has revised its stance on carrying distress flares on yachts and powerboats.
Due to advances in technology, safety chiefs say water users might not need to carry as many flares onboard as previously advised.
They said using Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and VHF DSC radios were worthy alternatives.
Stuart Carruthers, RYA cruising manager, said: “Our revised guidance will allow boaters to make informed decisions about the types of equipment they choose to carry. We are not saying don’t carry flares, but combined with modern devices you might not need to carry as many as previously recommended.”
