ELECTRICAL storms forced today's racing at the ISAF Sailing World Championships to be abandoned and, while frustrated, British match racer Annie Lush insisted it was for the best.
Lush alongside Lucy and Kate Macgregor, the latter a Southampton University student was scheduled to return to the water after yesterday's lay day but they only got as far as the boat park as overnight thunder and lightening continued.
Only one match racing flight took place, not involving the Brits, while all Finn, Laser Radial, men’s 470 and women’s windsurfing races were abandoned on safety grounds.
The British match racing trio therefore still stand with the three wins and one loss picked up on Sunday but will forego a proposed lay day tomorrow to make up for the time lost.
And with the weather predicted to get worse and not better, Lush admitted the right decision was made as the defence of their world title makes slow progress.
“So far we've averaged 15 minutes' racing a day since the start of the regatta which is a bit frustrating and means we have a lot more racing still to do,” said Lush..
“We still have plenty of time though, so it was the right call and it is good to keep the racing fair and safe.”
Britain's Finn, Laser Radial and men's 470 sailors will now face three races tomorrow, as will the women's windsurfers to help clear the backlog.
