I FIND it encouraging that editor Ian Murray, in his End of the Week column last week, realises how low TV producers have sunk in their eagerness to entertain us with much that is distasteful, disgusting and degrading – full of sexual innuendo and often explicit and gratuitously violent material.
There is a noticeable lack of moral restraint, indeed, the intention seems to be to try to increase the shock factor for an audience whose sensibilities have become so dulled as to be unshockable. I don’t even have a working television now. I got tired of switching off in the middle of programmes!
I recently re-read one of Mary Whitehouse’s books – poor Mary, how hard she worked for decency! And how right she was warning of the depravation of society and the corrupting influence of the media.
We desperately need to bring back the censors.
