I WAS interested to read the letter entitled ‘Do we all need to be technological?’ (Daily Echo, January 7 ).
Last year we were bombarded with up to three calls a day from a telephone company urging us to buy their broadband package.
We told them repeatedly that we didn’t want a computer ever as we preferred to spend our spare time on our many hobbies, and that on the rare occasions we wanted to go on line we used one of our daughter’s laptop.
We then had a phone number recognition service installed and didn’t answer unwanted calls.
However, one morning I answered the phone by mistake. I reminded the caller that we didn’t have a computer. He replied “Yes, I know that you’ve told us that, but we will give you one!”
When I answered in an exasperated tone that we didn’t want one, and that we no longer answered unwanted calls, he slammed the phone down before I could finish. So is it now compulsory to have a computer?
There are many people who for various reasons don’t have a computer so businesses must lose out because of this. I would love to know your other readers’ views on this. One good thing has occurred as the phone company hasn’t rung us since!
