I EXPECT, like me, readers of the Daily Echo are concerned at the news of the bus companies are wanting more money to operate the concessionary bus fares scheme, which provides free travel for those over 60.
The scheme, introduced by the Labour government, has been widely welcomed. We must make sure that the bus companies do not destroy it.
Portsmouth and most other councils in Hampshire have joined the county-wide scheme. I believe that if Portsmouth and other council can do it, then Southampton should make it available to those in the city who have a bus pass.
Southampton Liberal Democrat councillors need to change their decision and join in the county wide scheme.
If push comes to shove we may well have to wait until April 2008 when the Labour government proposes that the over 60s will be able to travel free over the whole country.
DON THOMAS, Coxford, Southampton.
