Climate change is the biggest single issue facing us. The Stern report, Government-commissioned and published just a few weeks ago, was clear that we can act now at limited cost, or we can carry on with business as usual and let our children and grandchildren pay an immense price.
Given that aviation is one of the main contributors to man-made climate change, I wonder how any of us could look at ourselves in the mirror in ten, 20, 30 years if find ourselves backing airport expansion for the sake of securing access to cheap flights - or even for the sake of a limited degree of job creation, given the economic chaos that failing to tackle climate change could eventually cause.
