WITH reference to the articles regarding Fairthorne Manor Golf Club in Botley, I would like to clarify one or two points.
There were basically two types of golfers, Manor and Manor club. We all paid the same subscription to the Manor and there was no fee to joining the club. Those that were in the club could obtain a GONGU R handicap and certificate if required. There were a good many competitions throughout the year as well as home and away games with other golf clubs, with a very active Vets and Ladies sections.
The diary for 2004 showed 375 members and their phone numbers although there were some members who do not wish to be included in the diary.
In 2010 there were 415 Ladies and Gentlemen members.
As to the reasons why so many of the members left to go to other clubs was stated correctly in Mr H.
Lockwood’s letter. This was the same reason why some of the clubs also stopped coming to the course.
As to the number of players not belonging to the club, I never knew, as they were classed as confidential data and the YMCA Manor would not furnish this information. I hope this helps clarify the situation for readers.
