I HAVE been known to sing – probably not too fortunate for those who are within earshot – but basically I can carry a tune.
If you listen to famous singers you find they interpret songs, some they sing softly almost like a lullaby, other songs they give it the full treatment usually because the song calls for this.
But shows like BGT or X Factor, whether the song is a lullaby or an anthem, they belt it out at the top of their range, warbling and shrieking giving it all they have. I know they are trying to show their singing prowess but their vocal chords will not take a career at full octane.
Go to any karaoke and the less talented are belting out songs just as they see on the talent shows, songs that should be sung with feeling, slightly spoken, not every note held on to until the singer almost expires through lack of air.
No one can deny Adele’s talent but even this diva was told by a specialist not to sing for six months or else her career would be behind her.
I suppose, if you are trying to impress judges and those judges can change your life for ever, you can understand why they scream in tune.
Talent programmes are popular and youngsters especially love them but they do not add much to the art of singing. I think we will be reaching for ear plugs for sometime yet.
It is funny but I can remember my Dad saying similar things about The Stones and The Beatles – or is it just a sign of me getting old?
